Hi --- I'm Dave. In my twenties, I started out to be a theoretical cosmologist, someone who studies the structure of the universe, the stars and galaxies. Hence my first study was in Physics and Mathematics. Little did I know that I would end up studying the universe in the fashion of a therapist. Given my interest in mathematics, I developed this formula to remind myself of the components necessary for effective change. Change is a continuous ongoing process that must start where I am rather than where I think I should be. The upside-down triangle is a physics symbol for gradient, the rate of change, and the dot in the middle reminds me that I need to start where I am, not where I think I should be. I am an individual (p) and I exist in relationship with my world, a field of emotional energy (Z). My ability to change is governed by, is a function of, hurting (H) in safety (S), having a vision (V) that fits (F) and always I resist the changes (X) in an unexpected way. To be most effective, I need tools, training, techniques, therapists, ... (T, whatever is required) and there is always risk (R). And finally, it is all to the power of grace (g), of the mystery of the universe, of God if you prefer a more formal language. We live a life of change; it is one of the few consistencies of our lives. The basic question is how are we going to live our changes. |
